set design

I view set design as an art form -- large, full-integrated, 3D works of art. Here are some classics:

FRIDAYS LIVE, Premiered Season 4 (2004 & Beyond)
The Athens Video Works production Fridays Live is shot in Studio C of the Radio-Television Building in Athens, OH. Unfortunately, many other student productions & college courses are shot in Studio C as well. Meaning the challenge with Fridays Live was that the set had to be built in easy-to-disassemble segments in order to allow the crew to build the set the night before & tear-down the night of every show. This set stood for less than 24 hours at a time, once a week, but it looked great on television. It's a little something I coined as "broadcast quality."

Fridays Live Season 4 Set Overview

An overview of the set (L-R): this season featured in-studio music guests (a first), so I angled the set in order to allow for the addition of this musical guest area; the hosts sat on the red couch infront of a mini-Athens replica (complete with stars); show-opening banter & in-studio skits were performed infront of the large wall (dubbed appropriately enough "the banter wall").

The hosts would enter the studio though the double doors, deliver their weekly banter infront of the large wall, & then host the majority of the show from the red couch.

FRIDAYS LIVE, Seasons 2 & 3 (2003-2004)
The Athens Video Works production Fridays Live is shot in Studio C of the Radio-Television Building in Athens, OH. Unfortunately, many other student productions & college courses are shot in Studio C as well. Meaning the challenge with Fridays Live was that the set had to be built in easy-to-disassemble segments in order to allow the crew to build the set the night before & tear-down the night of every show. This set stood for less than 24 hours at a time, once a week, but it looked great on television. It's a little something I coined as "broadcast quality."

And the finished project. An overview of the set (L-R): announcer booth; the hosts sitting on the red couch infront of a mini-Athens replica, an in-studio skit rehearsal infront of the large wall ("the banter wall").

Fridays Live Seasons 2 & 3

I was really into creating depth with pops of color this season.

Mini Athens

Mini-Athens: a section of Court Street that I made that sat behind the set's window frame.

II NEWS, 1994-1999
I've always loved local news. Through my adolescence I recruited friends into various news team roles, built a news center set in an upstairs room of my dad’s house, & regularly taped Berea’s news. While other kids were playing football I was picking out news desk laminates at the Home Depot, creating new segments & logos, or editing last night’s edition of the news. This was my hobby in high school.

II NEWS

This set rules. I might argue it's better than some on real TV.
