The Center Street Swing Bridge

CENTER STREET SWING BRIDGE | $95
CLEVELAND: THE CITY OF BRIDGES. The Center Street Bridge, Cleveland's only swing bridge, lies at the approximate spot Moses Cleaveland landed in 1796 & is the site of the first bridge over the Cuyahoga River. The present bridge was originally constructed in 1904, rehabilitated in 1949, reconstructed in 1989, & underwent a $2.6 million rehabilitation in 2010-2011 as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The bridge is a steel truss with unequal arms & is supported by a center pier in order to turn horizontally about a vertical axis to allow ships to pass in the river (since the two arms are unequal, a solid concrete deck on the short span serves as a counter-weight to an open mesh deck on the long span). The bridge is shown here in mid-swing, amped up in red & features rust & peeling paint details. The full Cleveland skyline & the Veterans Memorial Bridge make up the black & white background. The Center Street Swing Bridge is also notable because it was involved in the notorious "Bridge War" with the Columbus Road Lift Bridge.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION
Throughout its rich history as a bustling rust belt city, the need for bridges to cross the Cuyahoga River in order to connect with the rest of the nation resulted in over 330 bridges in the immediate Cleveland area. Original photography & graphic art collide with the collection Bridges, featuring five of the most important & aesthetically interesting bridges that remain in operation today; including swing, lift, railroad, & truss bridges. Each piece highlights one of these landmark bridges, amped up in color & contrasted against its surroundings, which are simplified to neutral black & white sketches.
Printed on canvas & stretched over a wood frame, this collection eliminates the need for traditional framing because the image wraps completely around all edges (but they come in the frame-friendly size of 11"x14" just in case).
